Fuck most of them. |

This winter is the official reshuffling of the deck. Yeah I knew, just giving you crap. Hopefully it will weed out the bad dealers, but I just hope the entire industry doesn't suffer from the internet/economy/weather trifecta. It still puts a hurting on the good ones too, especially ones that are trying to make a move to a bigger place.

I think the entire Internet ruined dealers thing is total BS. The dealers need to adapt to new technology just like the music industry had to adapt to digital music. No longer can a dealer charge 200% for something they never have in stock. They need to concentrate on value added service. No longer will the consumer be bogged down with dealer BS.
If the Internet is ruining your business, it means you aren't using the Internet to help your business. You either lead, follow or get out of the way. |

Furthermore, I think the Internet has been a great catalyst for getting more riders on the road. This means more bikes sold, more parts, more services, more gear, etc.

If the Internet is ruining your business, it means you aren't using the Internet to help your business. You either lead, follow or get out of the way. I would agree somewhat, that the industry is changing, but are you telling me that if you were a business owner you wouldn't feel the same way? Less dealers, with less inventory in stock, less retail sales, and most importantly less profit to cover overhead, will give consumers more of what they created, which may be a benefit to some people, but I'm guessing less will like it in the long run. I am already "switching over" to that mindset to stay alive. Your music example though isn't the same. Costs to produce are much less, and theft is more of a concern than competition. A better example would be for me to start selling my music online and compete with iTunes or whatever. You want Bruce Springsteen "Born to Run" I have it. iTunes is a buck, I can do it for 3 cents. PM me.

Dealers use to think all they had to do was sponsor a site and there would be thousands of people lined up to buy their shit. This is all while they are screwing people left and right. Good business aren't just about prices but building relationships with their customers. I still go to my local hardware store because the service is better. I see you doing that, building relationships with people and that is why customers praise you. People go to you because you are part of the community. Safety first is doing that as well. That is what will separate the good dealers from the shit dealers. I am glad though that I don't do bike shit for a living because I have to deal with a lot of crap.

If you are stuck, always fall back on the old "I may not know everything, but I can find the answer very fast." line. Which is very true. I use to be a hiring manager and the people who claim to know it all, generally are full of shit. Very few people know it all. They specialize in one thing and everything else they suck at. The best people are the people who know how to get things done when they need to fit a square peg in a round hole. This message was edited 1 time. Last update was at 08/05/2009 08:12:28 PM |

I plan on wearing a suit tomorrow, hopefully I don't get volunteered to make a McDonald's breakfast run like today. The interview I have tomorrow is a behavior based interview. From what everyone in my dept has told me, they aren't that concerned with your technical knowledge. They ask alot of "Tell me about a time when" questions. There are also going to be two people there, one is HR and the other is a manager in the engineering department. This message was edited 2 times. Last update was at 08/05/2009 08:17:42 PM |

How people answer tells a lot about people. I use to work with people with post doctorate degrees from MIT. Brilliant people as long as you discuss things in their field. These days they want people who can think on their feet and multi-task.
My theory was always the cup can only hold so much. Sooner or later, there will be spillage. Certain basic skills will be lost when someone becomes too specialized in one thing.

I've been working help desk support for two years and I always end up searching for solutions for problems I've never faced and programs I've never used. The projects I've worked with recently have to do with stuff I know nothing about and I've been doing lots of research on the internet trying to get stuff to work. What I'm really worried about is if they ask them a question and I can't think of a situation on the fly that fits. When my peer mentor was mock interviewing me I had this problem because I would sit there and blankly stare while thinking. It was a mock interview so I didn't try to stall for time but I'm worried I will into this problem in the real interview. |
