I've never sold a car before so where are the best places to list it? Do dealerships typically buy cars outright or is it trade-in only? Is Carmax any good?
I've sold a few bikes before but is there anything different about selling a car I should be aware of? The car is registered in another state, but that doesn't matter to the buyer, right? Thanks in advance!

Carmax is eh....... but than again I was trying to sell/trade in my jeep at the wrong time.
Honestly Carmax will outright buy your car without a trade in. It is worth it to take the trip to atleast find out what they'll offer. What car is it anyway? If you have your title in hand you can pretty much list it anywhere.... just BE CAREFUL!! Too many shady motherfuckers in this world. This message was edited 1 time. Yep, any dealer can buy your car if they want to. It is only a matter of who will offer you the best deal. Although, dealerships will low ball you worst than Mao, $1 a CC
. You will come out much better selling it to a private seller, but there you will need to have the title or work something out with the buyer to pay it off and hand them the title. Although, in the condition my Jetta was in, I would feel bad selling it to any private party as it needed some major repairs. I didn't want anyone taking me to court months later saying I sold them a lemon .

Most people don't understand how Carmax works, but what they do is they price their cars barely below KBB value. What most people don't get though, is KBB is a STARTING point for negotiation, not the end, so people think they're getting a good deal. Then, they give alot more for trade-ins because they know that if they do, the customer is alot more likely to purchase a car from them. When I sold cars, my ex bought a Scion TC from me, and was trading in her Ford Focus. We gave her a great number at $2500, and we went to Carmax, where they gave her $4800. |

Thanks!
I sold all my cars on Craigslist but I wasn't sure if it was as popular for selling cars. I was hoping to sell it through a dealer but would rather get decent money for the car since I'm not in a hurry to sell it so I'll just sell it myself. I've already got the title in hand. Anyone wanna teach me about cars and what all the crap means?

Wasn't it pretty new? VW's suck though. Buying my Passat was the biggest mistake and I keep hoping that it accidentally gets totaled before the end of the winter.

I intentionally left the doors open when I went to Utah last year hoping the car would not be there when I got back, no luck . Big mistake for me as well, won't do that for a long time . I had an 03 Jetta.

Yeah VWs suck, but their trade in is actually pretty decent. VWs are pretty much cult cars (especially the Golf/GTI), and are always holding their value pretty well. There was a huge problem with the 98-04 Jettas and the window clips breaking randomly, and while you're driving or while the car is just sitting there, the window will drop.

An ex co worker had that happen to his Jetta. |

Thankfully, I didn't have that issue, but I had other problems. burning oil, theft alarm going off randomly when temps were below freezing. Emission problem, service engine light on all the time. The radio would shut off for a few minutes for no reason. |

I already had a few of those issues with the VW within months of purchase, nothing yet but a CD problem on the Honda .
