In all honesty, it freaked me out because sales involves altruism. Made me question a lot of things.

I guess I'm just a little more darwinist than I'd thought- but seriously, is sales altruistic? You get nothing from it while bettering another being? I think that even that feeling of accomplishment that makes one feel better about helping someone is selfish... selfish enjoyment. I acknowledge it as such. It says so in my sig!

As salesmen, we try to create an illusion of altruism. We are trying to convince the customer that we have minimized our potential gain should they decide to do business with us. We try to create the illusion that we are negotiating with the most sincerity and with only their interests in mind. Most can see through this, but that is the ultimate goal. It's about making friendships/relationships. Good friends do things for other friends with a high degree of altruism. If a customer thinks I am acting with some degree of altruism, I am more likely to get the sale and he is less likely to complain about things like price or delivery.
