Depends on what exactly you are asking. Head to head with the same rider (ie Rossi cloned and on both) or would more riders be fast on a 500 as compared to a 800? You have to take the skill required and the learning curve into account.
Either way, I say no though. The 800 has more Bhp than the 500. The 500 peaked in development at 195 Bhp and was much more difficult to ride. The power band is very narrow and the bike is much less forgiving.
And I would also disagree with the racing having been much closer on the 500s. You had maybe 3 to 5 guys in the field on a given day that could really ride a 2 stroke to the limit. And from 94 - 98 it was really just one guy - Mick Doohan, often with Criville in tow.
That being said, the golden era for me was 1976 to 1993. 1994 to 1998 was all Doohan with some good showing from a number of other riders, but they just weren't anywhere near as consistant as Mighty Mick.
